Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Pollution Post Celebrations

On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Several parts of the capital registered an air quality index above 500, which represents ten times the healthy level established by the WHO.

Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, representing 15-20x higher than healthy standards.

Fireworks Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous smog that covers the capital as colder weather sets in.

Yet in recent months, the newly elected city government approached the supreme court to request a modification of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Decision and Reality

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, the court complied with the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific periods throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city registered pollution peaking around late evening to the most severe measurements observed during celebrations in at least three years.

Regional Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also initiated a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in Delhi have remained as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The problem in the city is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple investigations.

This pollution causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

The pollution is projected to be causing ten thousand premature fatalities annually in the city.
