Christantus Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the last 16, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season were no match against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
